Meet The Team

SEI is made up of a fantastic team of volunteers who dedicate countless hours and effort in transforming ideas to reality in spreading the surf safety message within Australia and internationally.

Craig Riddington - President

craig Riddington

Since he began his career in Surf Lifesaving as a member of the Manly Junior Life Saving Club at the age of 10 - Riddington or 'Riddo' as he is known, has collected 21 State, 12 Australian and two world championships in Ironman and Surf Lifesaving events. A recently released book titled "The Greatest Surf Life Savers in History" hailed Riddo as the 'greatest surf swimmer ever' and amongst the top 25 competitors in the history of the movement. Riddo retired from competitive sport in 1996 to pursue coaching and sport management roles. Since then he has established Surf Educate Australia and Surf Educators International. At the moment he is working on spreading the objects of Surf Educators International globally, as well as operating his successful Surf Educate Australia school water safety programs.

Bruce Hopkins - Deupty President

Over the past 10 years Bruce Hopkins or 'Hoppo' has been involved in mass rescues, body retrievals and more resuscitations than any other lifeguard, earning the Australian Lifeguard of the Year Award in 2006 and recently winning two Gold medals at the Australian Surf Lifesaving.

As well as being a strong leader, he's a well respected waterman and competitor, recently winning two gold medals at the Australian Masters Surf Life Saving titles in the double ski and board paddle. Hoppo is one of the founding members of SEI and is currently Vice president specialising in international services along with his team from Bondi Rescue.

Grant Kenny - Patron

Kenny made headlines in 1980 when, as a 16-year-old, he won both the Australian Junior and Open Iron Man Championship on the same day. Kenny then won the Australian Open Ironman Title for the following three years. He also became a household name in Australia due to his sponsorship deals with Kelloggs Nutri-Grain, and appeared in television commercials for the cereal.

After turning his attention to kayaks in the mid-1980s, Kenny later became an important figure in creating the Uncle Toby's Super Series, which was a ground-breaking professional Iron Man circuit that lasted for 12 years. Kenny was also a competitor in the first two seasons, but by 1989 his other interests had taken away the necessary time to train for such a demanding sport and his results were never anything like his domination during his late teens.

In kayaks, Kenny competed in two Summer Olympics. He won a bronze medal in the K-2 1000 m event with Barry Kelly at Los Angeles in 1984.
